Two major contracts for DORMA’s northern service division
DORMA’s service division in the north east, Service North, based in Jarrow, has won two major contracts in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, coincidentally both sites being near the heart of the City in the busy Northumberland Street area – Eldon Square Shopping Centre and Newcastle Central Library. Newcastle is the fifth largest shopping destination in Great Britain with over 40 million people visiting the city's shops every year and Eldon Square, in the heart of Newcastle, is Europe's largest city centre shopping precinct. It boasts over 140 outlets and two of the largest department stores in the country, Fenwick and John Lewis.
Eldon Square
Service North have undertaken major refurbishment work in the Eldon Square Centre, bringing the whole complex up to compliance standards with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) which comes into force in October this year. The comprehensive work undertaken included a £230,000 window replacement project in the Grainger Town Development part of the complex; the replacement of 20 roller shutters to main entrances; the installation of four FFT automatic folding door systems in place of manual entrances; and the provision of new steel doors for bin cupboard areas. All fire doors have been replaced throughout the corridor areas of the Centre as well.
Public safety and security are always paramount in major shopping areas, but with such high pedestrian traffic in the Eldon Square Centre it is vital that the DORMA products are serviced and maintained to the very highest levels. Jason Pease, General Manager for Service North picks up the story. “We have a ‘reactive servicing’ contract in place with the Centre. Basically this means that if there is a breakdown or malfunction with any of the products, we guarantee an engineer on site within a maximum of one working day. Although we usually respond within the same day – and always within the same day if there is a serious security or safety risk. The Newcastle projects really do demonstrate our capability though. Most people are aware of course that we refurbish, service and maintain DORMA doors and door operators, but it might be surprising to learn that we also offer a comprehensive service package for non – DORMA equipment and for industrial doors such as roller shutters and grills, which tend to take a lot of punishment”
Newcastle Central Library
Just off Northumberland Street, in Princess Square, is the Newcastle Central Library, the second of Service North’s recent projects. The City Council took the decision to refurbish the entrance and improve access to this busy library. DORMA, in the shape of Service North, were asked to install a full new entrance replacing the old manual doors with two DORMA ES 90 automatic sliding door operators, aluminium screen work and manual fire escape doors. For security purposes a large roller shutter was installed to cover the whole entrance area. The result was an enlarged entrance area, with vastly improved access.
