DORMA Automatics keep the Met DDA-Compliant
DORMA automatic door operators have been installed in a number of Metropolitan Police force stations in order to improve access for disabled people and to bring the buildings into compliance with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
Under the terms of the DDA, which will come in force in 2004, it will be unlawful to discriminate against any disabled person on the grounds of their disability. For the owners and occupiers of all buildings to which the public has access, this means making what the Act calls ‘reasonable adjustments’ to ensure that people with physical disabilities have equal access into and throughout the building.
In many cases, these reasonable adjustments involve the fitting of automatic or power-assisted doors, and at police stations throughout the Metropolitan region, DORMA has been selected to provide the appropriate solution and fulfil the Met’s aim – to ensure their police stations and service are available to everyone, from people in wheelchairs to mums with pushchairs.
The DORMA product range has yielded the ideal combination of door equipment necessary for upgrading the Met’s stations. All stations are undergoing a standard refurbishment, and meeting the DDA requirements is an important part of this.
At each station in turn a new DDA-compliant main entrance is being installed, and this will eventually result in every station having an automatic sliding door at its main entrance. Also, the waiting area of each station is being separated from the counter by a fully glazed screen and access through this will also be via an automatic sliding or hinge door.
At all these stations, DORMA’s Compact Slide has been fitted to operate sliding doors at the main entrance and reception areas. The Compact Slide is a low-profile door operator measuring just 100 mm x 100 mm in cross-section while retaining the performance, reliability and safety of a more conventional unit. It is fitted with a specially designed miniature radar actuator that sits unobtrusively on the fascia and can be connected to a wide range of safety sensors ensuring that all installations comply in full with the relevant British Standards.
DORMA’s ED 800 accessible door operator has also been installed in Metropolitan Police Stations. This device is ideal for use with conventional swing doors that can be opened normally by able-bodied users and in this mode, the ED 800 acts simply as a closing device.
However, the ED 800 can be operated automatically to allow disabled people to use the door without difficulty. The servo-assist function reduces the opening effort, making the door easy for frail, elderly people or small children to operate. In the fully automatic push-and-go mode, the door will open and close itself. The ED 800 also has an ‘intelligent’ safety function to prevent the door closing on a person while they pass through the doorway.
At Lambeth, a mock up model police station has been created and is a helpful guideline for work continuing throughout the Metropolitan region. At Lambeth the Compact Slide and ED800 units have again been used but feature alongside DORMA’s RST automatic space-saver, which has been installed at the main entrance. The RST is ideal for retro-fitting into existing doors where space is at a premium. Featuring a compound pivot/swinging action and bearings mounted either above or below the door, the RST gives a door opening nearly as wide as the wall opening itself.
