DORMA automatics for Bradford University refurbishment
Late last year the University of Bradford celebrated its 40th birthday with the opening of the refurbished Richmond Building and a new atrium development. DORMA, the world market leader in automatic doors, had cause to celebrate as well, having installed nine sets of automatic doors as part of the major refurbishment programme.
The Richmond Building, a five-storey structure, is the main building at the University and the recent refurbishment, which included the development of a new £5m atrium, confirms the University’s commitment to contemporary sustainable design, energy efficient operation and good working environment.
Special cladding has been used on the existing Richmond Building to improve insulation and reduce the university carbon footprint and the major new atrium development boasts a roof made from ethyl tetra fluoro ethylene (ETFE) – the same material as the Eden Project.
DORMA automatics were the natural choice in this environment. Heat conservation can be improved and dust and dirt minimised with the correct selection of door types. Also high volumes of staff and student traffic represent a major challenge when it comes to providing safe access and emergency egress. Particularly as the requirements of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA) have to be met as well.
In the entrance to the new atrium area there is a bank of three ES200 bi-parting sliding doors, with a further two units within the glazed area. The DORMA ES200 is an elegant and functional unit that has recently been completely redesigned to feature a stylish and modern cover design with clean contours and perforated end caps to complement any design scheme.
A new energy saving motor ensures virtually silent operation and the latest microprocessor automatically controls the opening and closing speeds of the door, ensuring the highest possible safety at all times. This, combined with the new rollers result in the smoothest ever DORMA automatic door. A new electric lock with a self-testing function ensures the doors are always secure, and the programming functions allow for fast installation, set-up and maintenance.
At the far end of the atrium area, an entrance lobby is fitted with four RST-R space-saving doors. These are designed so that the door leaves perform a swivel motion in the smallest of spaces. As a result, the clear passage width of a space-saver is not much less than the overall structural width of the doorway itself.
As with the entire automatics range from DORMA, the RST-R’s excel in terms of their fast, smooth, quiet operation and reliability. Also, because they can be opened like a normal hinged door, they can be used on emergency escape routes with a clear passage width upwards of 900mm.
It is of course a legal requirement that all automatic doors are serviced annually to BS 7036 to ensure safe and secure operation, long term reliability and working efficiency. As the largest manufacturer of door equipment in the world, DORMA has a UK Service Division employing over 200 installation and service engineers – and a variety of service options are available. The University of Bradford has the comprehensive DORMA 5 Star cover in place. This policy offering complete peace of mind, with no charge for either parts or labour if replacement is required as a result of normal everyday use.
