DORMA call for tougher action on false door closer marking

There has been concern in the industry about the authenticity of CE marking on some door closer products. One of DORMA’s customers was unsure about the authenticity of the CE marking on a competitor’s door closer and packaging and approached DORMA for advice. The closer in question was sent to Warringtonfire for verification. Graham Hulland, Product Marketing Manager for DORMA Door Controls takes up the story: “The closers and packaging displayed ‘EC Reference Number 1121’. “There is no such thing as an ‘EC Reference Number’ and 1121 is in fact the Warrington Certification’s Notified Body Number. By displaying ‘EC Reference Number: 1121’ on the door closer labels, the manufacturer was implying that Warrington are the certification body responsible for attesting conformity of its products to EN11554”.

Warringtonfire confirmed that they have no knowledge of these products at all and have not issued a certificate of conformity. As a result they will be referring the matter to Trading Standards and taking legal advice over the matter. Bob Williams, Certification Manager at Warringtonfire comments: “This is a growing problem, Trading Standards don’t appear to be addressing the issue which will get worse as more construction products become eligible for CE Marking. All parties really need to understand and get to grips with the situation before CE Marking falls into total disrepute.”


It is recommended that should there be any doubt over the authenticity of any form of certification relating to door closers, CE marking and EN 1154, the ODPM should be contacted for a list of notified bodies. That list, along with the various bodies’ reference numbers, can be checked against the numbers displayed on the closer and packaging and by contacting the notification body in question, authenticity, or otherwise, can then be verified.
