DORMA concealed closer gets security job at Gatwick
Gatwick, owned by BAA, the world’s leading airport company, is the busiest international single-runway airport in the world and the second largest airport in the UK. Currently, Gatwick handles around 33 million passengers a year, which is forecast to rise around 40 million over the next ten years.
Security is BAA highest priority and DORMA secured a new contract to supply four stainless steel doors at its Gatwick airport to create a secure area separating the departure lounge and check-in area, this is known as central search. The gates prevent passengers accessing the secure area and are unique to Gatwick.
DORMA, the world’s leading door control supplier, was called in to advise on which closers would be best suited to the project and was chosen for its reputation and experience in door manufacturing. The specification called for a double action, hidden closer and it was soon apparent that the most suitable solution was the ITS 96 concealed cam action closer.
The ITS 96 is the first system of its kind that can be concealed within the door, making it an elegant solution – and also an extremely secure one. The closer body and slide arm, which are available in a range of finishes, are extremely compact and can be installed within virtually all doors up to 1250mm wide and with a thickness of 45mm or more. The heart shaped cam-action is unique to DORMA and means that when the door is opened the opening force falls away rapidly after the first few degrees, resulting in little resistance throughout the opening cycle – and the same happens on closing. The result is a much easier and safer door operation.
Because of the unusual nature of the installation – and the special design of the doors – everything was factory tested first to ensure that all the components worked together satisfactorily before installation. This also meant that the fitting on site was fast and efficient, as any potential problems had been resolved during the test procedure.
