DORMA closers solve draught problem at Goodwood

Set high on the Sussex Downs, Goodwood is one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world. Horseracing began at the course in 1802 and today ‘Glorious Goodwood’ is a firm diary date in the English Summer Season.

The March Stand is a real favourite with racegoers, commanding a lofty position in the Richmond Enclosure. It has a number of paddock-facing boxes with balconies and south-facing views towards the Parade Ring and the Solent beyond. The other side of the stand featuring a limited number of course-facing boxes with private balconies directly opposite the winning post.

One problem though is that the Stand is situated 400 metres above sea level and during race days when the doors to the boxes are open on both sides of the stand, there is a tendency for a through draft to cause doors to slam. Dyson King, Architectural Ironmongers in Chichester, were asked for their expert opinion and they recommended DORMA closers.

The solution had to take into account that on race days the catering staff are extremely busy in and out of the boxes and the public, particularly children, cannot be put at risk of having a door slam on them. Dyson King specified the DORMA TS 83 closer.

It is a really tried and trusted product, developed over many years. A high mechanical efficiency provides an easy to open action and it features a ‘thinking back check’. The resistance developed by this back check system is directly proportional to door acceleration as the door is opened beyond 70° or thereabouts. It is almost imperceptible when the door is opened slowly, but if the door is opened quickly – or by a strong draught – it responds proportionately.

The TS 83 is easy to fix and just as easy to adjust and there is a closer for almost every door size and application. It is available in a range of different finishes and cover options, the Goodwood installation being bronze to co-ordinate with other existing closers elsewhere in the stand.
