DORMA automatics for Bradford University refurbishment

Late last year the University of Bradford celebrated its 40th birthday with the opening of the refurbished Richmond Building and a new atrium development. DORMA, the world market leader in automatic doors, had cause to celebrate as well, having installed nine sets of automatic doors as part of the major refurbishment programme.

The Richmond Building, a five-storey structure, is the main building at the University and the recent refurbishment, which included the development of a new £5m atrium, confirms the University’s commitment to contemporary sustainable design, energy efficient operation and good working environment.

Special cladding has been used on the existing Richmond Building to improve insulation and reduce the university carbon footprint and the major new atrium development boasts a roof made from ethyl tetra fluoro ethylene (ETFE) – the same material as the Eden Project.

DORMA automatics were the natural choice in this environment. Heat conservation can be improved and dust and dirt minimised with the correct selection of door types. Also high volumes of staff and student traffic represent a major challenge when it comes to providing safe access and emergency egress. Particularly as the requirements of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA) have to be met as well.
