DORMA Automatics installed in over 100 police stations

Police authorities throughout the south east of England are installing DORMA automatic doors in their main police stations and sub-stations to help meet compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), which comes into force this October. Almost 30 main stations throughout Essex, Sussex, Surrey and south London have been completed already and a further 90 sub-stations are to be refurbished by the end of this year. The aim of the various police authorities involved is that by making the ‘reasonable adjustments’ to buildings required by the DDA, it will ensure that people with disabilities are able to access and move around in the public areas of the buildings without hindrance. Automatic doors are an ideal solution as they provide a means of opening and closing doors without any need for physical contact. This is relevant not just for those people with disabilities, but the elderly and injured as well.

Initially it was the Metropolitan Police who tested a number of door operators – from a selection of different manufacturers – in a mocked up working environment at Lambeth police station.
