DORMA success continues in Ireland

Originally established in Dublin as DORMA Door Controls Ltd in 1979, DORMA Ireland Ltd has grown to become market leader for door controls and is very well known for their glass fittings and automatic solutions throughout the 26 counties that make up the Republic.
The name change reflects the company’s ambition to grow the business in other key product areas as well – including door service and maintenance. Some recent projects in and around Dublin demonstrate the wide range of access solutions available from the company.

Vodafone combine aesthetics with reliability…

Vodafone's Irish corporate headquarters at Central Park, Leopardstown, are designed to make life as comfortable as possible for the staff and encourage a stimulating and dynamic work environment. Enormous attention was paid to each aspect of the interior design detail and that included the door hardware and controls. Every interior door is fitted with a DORMA ITS 96 concealed cam-action door closer. Unlike conventional rack and pinion closers DORMA’s cam-action closer has a unique linear drive mechanism and heart shaped cam. This means that when the door is opened the opening force falls away rapidly after the first few degrees resulting in little resistance throughout the opening cycle – and the same happens on closing. The result is a much easier and safer door operation, particularly for people with physical disabilities. For prestigious applications such as the Vodafone corporate headquarters, aesthetic integrity is paramount too and the ITS96 closer has the advantage of being concealed in the door leaf – making it practically invisible when the door is closed, helping to maintain the visual integrity of the door.

The main entrance to the building and all staff entrances are fitted with the DORMA ED 200 automatic door operator. This is a powerful, fully automatic, electro-hydraulic swing door operator suitable for standard, large and heavy doors. It can be adapted to a wide range of different applications and installation conditions and incorporates numerous adjustable features. All emergency exits are fitted with DORMA AD 4000 panic hardware. The AD 4000 is a full width touch bar and is a tried and tested solution commonly adopted in these applications. It has stainless steel deadlocking Pullman type latches, requiring the minimum of effort to open and is available in a range of architectural metal finishes. There are special options for solenoid operation and monitoring switches and the hardware is suitable for single, double, timber and metal doors.

Special entrance for the Westin Hotel…

Constructed behind the historic listed facade of the former Allied Irish Bank built in 1863 and situated opposite Trinity College, the five-floor Westin Hotel is a new landmark in the city, creating an enviable level of luxury in the heart of the capital. Its interior styling combines traditional mahogany furnishing with rich, warm colours and a superb atrium is a major feature. The entrance to the hotel has to accommodate a constant flow of inward and outward traffic, yet at the same time maintain a pleasant climate inside the building – and of course impress visitors with their first sight of the hotel. The DORMA KTV revolving door installed at the Westin easily meets all three criteria. It prevents noise, dirt and draughts, is thoroughly hard working and dependable and has a sophisticated appearance. The KTV is available with a choice of glazed or metal panelled walls and comes in four standard sizes, with 2, 3, or 4 wings. However, on this occasion the requirement was for a special purpose built three wing unit, because of limitations imposed by the Westin façade.

Croke Park revamps main entrance…

Known for many years as the Jones Road Sportsground and home of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1884, Croke Park, situated right in the heart of the Irish capital, is now a magnificent new stadium with a capacity of around 80,000 people. It is also one of Dublin's premier meeting, conference and event centres. The latest development phase included a complete revamp of the main entrance area, where the requirement was for a glass sliding wall that would aesthetically match the newly fitted manually operated glass doors. The unique DORMA Horizontal Sliding Wall (HSW) system provided the perfect answer, offering a flexible access solution for the various events at the stadium. One of the main features of the system is that there are no floor channels or guides, so there are no breaks in the flooring material and no dirt traps or obstacles underfoot to trip over. When the system is fully opened, the panels are stacked in parking bays. The HSW is also available as an automatic system and virtually any shade and colour combination for the fitting surfaces is possible – so the system can be integrated perfectly into practically any interior design requirement.

The Nude Restaurant, room with a view…

The DORMA Horizontal Sliding Wall (HSW) system features again at arguably one of Dublin's healthiest and trendiest fast-food restaurants. Nude, at Georges Quay, is owned by David Quirke and Norman Hewson (brother of U2’s Bono). This very successful chain of Dublin restaurants came about after David visited America and was impressed by the range of Juice Bars, Minneapolis wrap restaurants and New York soup joints. The emphasis at Nude is to maintain a high standard of fresh, organic, affordable food, all served in a vibrant atmosphere. It is situated next to the financial services area of the City, right on the River Liffey and the Horizontal Sliding Wall system contributes to the trendy, open feel of the restaurant. This new installation consists of ten panels, incorporating two swing doors, all of which slide and stack allowing an uninterrupted view across the quay whether open or closed.
