DORMA movable walls specified by Stirling Prize nominated Civil Justice Centre

Two DORMA Variflex movable walls have been installed at the new £113m Manchester Civil Justice Centre, officially opened recently by Her Majesty The Queen. The stunning new 14-storey building – which was short-listed for the 2008 RIBA Stirling Prize for architectural excellence – houses 47 courtrooms and 75 consultation rooms, in addition to office and support space. Constructed by Bovis Lend Lease, it is the biggest court complex to be built in the UK since the Royal Courts of Justice in London in 1878 and will accommodate up to 3,000 people during each working day.

Specified by project architects Denton Corker Marshall, the Variflex movable walls are located in the conference room and the judge’s dining room. Installation was by specialist interior fit-out contractors, Mivan Ltd. Project Manager for Mivan, Michael Lavery comments: “We have worked successfully with DORMA many times before, but that was with their ironmongery products. This was the first time that we had been involved with Variflex and we received excellent support from the DORMA installation team”.

The DORMA Variflex range allows totally customised flexibility to be brought to multi-functional layouts, including solutions for sloping ceilings and circular areas; with system configurations that can accommodate straight, angled, polygonal and even ellipsoid partitioning as required.
Manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic options are available, the advantage with the semi-automatic version being that the sealing strip operation is electronically controlled, eliminating time consuming hand cranking. The fully automatic version operates totally at the push of a button, so that panel travel and sealing are silent and efficient, allowing areas to be partitioned off – and opened up again – quietly, effortlessly and extremely quickly and the precise contact pressure of the sealing strips is assured at all times.

With aesthetic design consideration very much in mind, the range of finishes available is impressive as well, with a choice that includes real wood veneers that can be ebonised, waxed, brushed or lime-washed; laminates and metallic finishes; granite fabric coverings and stainless steel inserts; acoustic, sheet steel and fibreglass surfaces; glass inserts, mirrors and even textile coverings.

The DORMA Variflex system also offers a wide choice of stacking/parking arrangements – even in the case of complex room proportions where sloping ceilings or circular spaces have to be accommodated.
