DORMA contributes to sustainable environment at Edge Hill University
The new Faculty of Health at Edge Hill University in Lancashire is a building that combines exceptional design with high sustainability. DORMA has been specified to supply their movable wall, automatics, and door control products, helping to contribute to the overall ethos of the new university Faculty.
The Faculty of Health provides education for health care professionals in Merseyside and the North West, and is one of the best facilities in the country. It is an extremely busy environment and safe and efficient access, egress and movement around the building are of paramount importance.
DORMA delivers sustainability by providing energy efficiency solutions that require significantly lower maintenance and running costs, resulting in long-term best value performance throughout the life of the building. The products also of course enable compliance with the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Act (SENDA), now incorporated as Part 4 of the DDA.
The variety of access and egress requirements at the new faculty were complex and this led to specialist architectural ironmongers, Lloyd Worrall Group, recommending DORMA to the architect. Due to the specific requirements of the project, a close working relationship had to evolve between all three companies. Lloyd Worrall Merseyside was key to coordinating the requirements of the project and the scheduling of DORMA’s products, regularly liaising with all the parties to draw together the detailed specification.
The new Faculty has a multi-purpose 800 seater lecture theatre, designed as a T-shape, which utilises the DORMA Variflex TOP 120 movable wall system. It not only provides an aesthetic and functional room division capability, but also has to perform as a reliable sound insulator to avoid any annoying interference between adjacent rooms when in concurrent use. Just as important is that the Variflex system enables smaller room areas to be created, which helps optimise heating and lighting usage..
Automatic doors are essential in this high pedestrian environment, and DORMA has supplied ES200 sliding door units and ED200 swing door units at strategic locations within the building. The DORMA ES200 is an elegant and functional unit, with an saving power unit that ensures the highest possible levels of efficiency. This is an important feature as two hard working units are fitted close together at the busy entrance lobby of the Faculty of Health, forming a simple air lock, which helps reducing air conditioning and heating costs, as well as providing protection from external noise, dust and dirt.
Another energy efficient solution is the DORMA ED200, a powerful, fully automatic electro-hydraulic swing door operator. There are two units fitted in the Lower Ground Floor area of the Faculty of Health building, one leading to a courtyard and the other providing access and egress to the main external campus area.
Complementing the automatics are over 160 of DORMA’s unique TS90 cam-action closers fitted throughout the Faculty. The closer features a linear drive mechanism combined with a heart-shaped cam, a design means that when the door is opened, the opening force falls away rapidly resulting in little resistance throughout the opening cycle. This makes it much easier and safer in use for people with disabilities, and of course students or staff carrying books or heavy items. Despite the low opening force, the unit is extremely efficient and has a closing force that firmly closes the door, minimising any draughts and energy loss from the area.
