External doors are subject to wind loading and external forces, which will not necessarily affect internal doors. DORMA suggest a maximum height of 2400mm for any type of frameless toughened glass door, in order to reduce the amount of flexing within the glass itself. This is due to the nature of the glass, which is extremely flexible and has a different safety criteria when compared to steel and timber doors. DORMA suggest that doors in excess of 1100mm wide, or heavy-duty usage doors always have a bottom rail, as this provides a continuous clamp across the full width of the door. Please note that DORMA always work on maximum weights on all glass doors and assemblies. Heights of 3 metres and widths of 1.4 metres are achievable, but usage and location need to be taken into consideration.

Rails allow the use of larger and more secure doors, and they also provide a safe bottom edge for the door. External door leafs greater than 1100mm wide are suggested to use a door rail.
